Edward Harold Peacock was born in Soham on 3rd November 1917 (Newmarket Q4-1917 3B:607), baptised in Soham on 30th November 1917, son of George and Georgiana PEACOCK (née LEONARD) of The Cotes, Soham.

He married Doris I.HARLEY (Ely Q1-1938 3B:925). Anthony E was born 1938, Raymond G was born 1941.

They were at 55 Downfields, Soham for the 1939 register, Edward a lorry driver and Doris I [1-6-1917] later HILL (she married Thomas HILL in 1947. There are three closed records.


HMS "Martin" was an M-class destroyer of the Royal Navy, launched on Tyneside at the yard of Vickers-Armstrongs on 12th December 1940. She was sunk by U-431 on 10th November 1942 off Algiers. Force 'H' was the covering force for the Allied landings in Algiers and Oran, on 8th November 1942. The task of Force 'H' was to guard against the Italian Fleet, during the landings. HMS "Martin" was torpedoed by German submarine U-431 [Dommes] on the morning of 10th November as a result of which she blew up and sank in position 37:53'N 003:57'E. The only survivors were four officers and 59 ratings picked up by HMS "Quentin", 161 died.
